Two Vinny Faherty goals were enough for Galway United to move into third place in the Premier Division table with a 2-0 win over Wexford Youths in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night.
Neither team could open the scoring in the first half, before the Galway-born striker struck twice in the second period to seal the points.
The home side could have taken an early lead through midfielder Andy Mulligan as he latched onto a through ball from striker Paul Murphy down the left but United keeper Conor Winn was out quickly to block the shot.
Two minutes later, Eric Molloy’s through ball down the left found Mulligan again but his cross couldn’t find the onrushing Murphy.
Faherty came close when he collected a Marc Ludden long throw down the left and he forced Youths keeper Doyle into a good low save. Danny Ledwith hook the bouncing ball off the goal line.
Faherty could have given the visitors the lead after 20 minutes but he couldn’t direct his header from Ryan Connolly’s deep free kick on target.
Youths striker Murphy almost caught out United keeper Winn but his lob dropped just over the crossbar. Padraic Cunningham forced Doyle into a smart save just before the break at the other end.
Galway United made their second-half pressure count as they broke the deadlock five minutes into the second period. Chris Kenny fouled Stephen Walsh in middle of midfield, and Connolly fired in a left-footed free kick that was met by the head of the unmarked Faherty to make it 1-0.
Doyle was by far the busier of the two netminders and he kept his side in the game with a save of real quality.
Defender Stephen Last had blocked Faherty in front of goal, before the ball fell to Cunningham and his low drive forced Doyle into a superb one-handed save to his right to keep the Youths in the game.
But just six minutes later Galway United sealed the points. In an almost identical copy of the Faherty’s first goal, Connolly's free kick from midfield found the striker and he powered his header past Doyle from inside the Youths penalty area to lift United into third place.
