On the night that Derry City retired their number 18 jersey in honour of Mark Farren, it was fitting that the Candystripes claimed victory against title contenders Cork City with an excellently taken winner from Ronan Curtis.
A powerful effort from 19-year-old Curtis, a player representing the new generation of players at the Brandywell, was enough to see the Candystripes pick up all three points against the Leesiders in the Bogside on Friday evening.
It was the perfect response and a solid display from Derry, following their opening night defeat to local rivals Finn Harps the previous week.
Cork City will know that they will have to improve performance wise from this display, if they want to overtake Dundalk and become league champions.
Derry took the lead in the 60th minute, when Curtis and McNamee linked up well just outside the box, before the teenage buried the ball low into the back of the net, getting his second league goal for the club in the process.
It was a goal which their second half performance deserved, as they were applying the pressure on Caulfield's side continuously. Cork's night went from bad to worse, as Greg Bolger was shown a straight red card for a foul on Curtis.
