Ten matches unbeaten see Wexford Youths Women top of the league after a comprehensive six one win in Castlebar. The match was switched from Castlebar Celtic pitch to Milebush on Saturday as Celtic Park was deemed unplayable so the game was moved to the Mayo League grounds which was well up to the task.
The opening twenty minutes of this game were even enough although Wexford did score after just five minutes when Rianna Jarrett was on target from a corner. Castlebar pressed strongly to get back level but found the visitors defence impossible to break down and despite enjoying the lion share of possession, the home side found themselves two nil down when the in form Jarrett scored again. Celtic pulled one back within a minute when Emma Mullan capitalised on a lack of concentration in defence to make it two one but that was the final highlight of the game for the home side.
The visitors controlled remainder of the game and with ten minutes to go to half time, Ciara Rossiter found the net to make it three one and were now enjoying full control of possession and were making life very difficult for the home side.
The second half continued much as the first half had ended with Wexford well in control and two further goals from Jarrett in the fifty seventh and sixty eight minutes saw the game move well out of reach of the Mayo girls. The day went from bad to worse for Castlebar when they deflected a Maria Delahunty free kick into their own net for six one ensuring Wexford remained top of the table
Manager John Flood also used the final ten minutes as an opportunity to give competitive debuts to Beserta Ajeti and Tamara Furlong while also bringing Krista Minto on to replace Rianna Jarrett
This game always had the potential to be a banana skin for the girls in Pink and they will be relieved to come home with the three points after an overall excellent team performance. They now take a break for a week before the arrival of Raheny United to Ferrycarrig Park in two weeks time.
