Hoops add winger as O'Neill bulks up squad

Shamrock Rovers manager Michael O’Neill beat off competition from rival Premier Division clubs to win the signature of winger Billy Dennehy.

Having agreed to recently cancel his contract with Cork City, the tricky midfielder did not have to wait long before finding a new club as Rovers snapped him up within days of becoming a free agent.

The Kerry native originally started his career with Sunderland and enjoyed a short loan spell with Accrington Stanley before returning to the League of Ireland, where he linked up with Derry City.

While he found it difficult to break into the first-team at the Brandywell, he did enough to catch the attention of Paul Doolin, who brought him to Cork last season and he scored 7 goals in 27 starts for the Leesiders.

Now he has decided to join Rovers and become O’Neill’s third new signing of the off-season following the earlier captures of Enda Stevens (St Patrick’s Athletic) and James Chambers (Drogheda United).

O’Neill recently stated that he was searching for a new goalkeeper to act as back-up to Alan Mannus and wants to bring in at least one more defender and midfielder, so there should be more news filtering out of Tallaght Stadium in the coming weeks.
