Drogheda United have today confirmed that manager Alan Mathews has signed a two-year extension to his contract.

The news comes as a further boost to the resurgent Boynesiders who are now looking to build up a squad to challenge in next season's Premier Division.

Mathews' first season as United manager saw him achieving what many believed was an impossible task in keeping the club in the Premier Division, having had virtually no time to assemble a squad following Drogheda's examinership process.

Coupled with the input and revenue now generated by the supporters' Claret And Blue Club, the Louth team have set themselves a springboard from which they hope to secure their future as a League of Ireland club and become a more dominant force in the Irish domestic scene.

On a less positive note, it has also been revealed that the club's Player of the Year James Chambers, whose contract with the United Park outfit had expired, has left the club and signed for Shamrock Rovers.
