A superb long range shot from Keith Kearney rescued a point for Wexford Youths against Sporting Fingal at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday night.
A goal from Fingal defender five minutes before the interval had cancelled out a 26th minute opener from Wexford’s Paul Malone. Conan Byrne then fired the away side into a deserved lead just three minutes after half time, before Kearney struck on 68 minutes to grab Youths a share of the spoils on the final night of action in the First Division.
The point was enough for Sporting Fingal to end their first season in existence in third position after Waterford United crashed to a 2-0 defeat away to Monaghan United, while Youths finished seventh.
Sporting Fingal passed up a series of gilt-edge chances in the opening stages and they were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal on 26 minutes when Malone finished coolly past Fingal ‘keeper Brendan Clarke from close range.
However, their lead was only to last 14 minutes, with Doran pulling Fingal back on level terms with a neat finish after Wexford ‘keeper Pa Doyle had failed to clear a high cross in to the box.
Paul Byrne then put Fingal ahead on 48 minutes when he turned in Daniel Corcoran’s cross. Byrne then passed up a great opportunity to grab a third for his side, and that miss was to come back to haunt him on 68 minutes when Kearney played a one-two with Gavin Doyle before shooting home from all of 25 yards.
