The Reds turned down an offer from Nottingham Forest for a reported £15 million fee.

The Corkman has made 12 appearances for the The Reds this season, his most in a single season for the club. He has mostly featured in the League Cup and UEFA Europa League.

According to the Irish Daily Mirror, Forest failed with a late bid as they did not meet Liverpool’s valuation.

New boss Nuno Espírito Santos has identified a goalkeeper as an area that needs addressing as current number one Matt Turner has made costly errors this season, conceding 40 goals in 22 league games.

From an Irish perspective, Kelleher, who turns 26 later this year, as made less than 50 club appearances in his career and needs to obtain regular first team football to achieve his potential.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar speaking at an event recently outlined his thoughts on Kelleher’s conundrum.

“If Ireland want him to be their number one in Ireland, then he’s going to have to have games,” said Grobbelaar who was speaking as part of a Carlsberg 0.0 panel discussion in Dublin on Monday.

“The only way that I can see that he has games is for Liverpool to have a clause in his contract. If Alisson leaves, he comes back as number one. It’s the only way I see that happening.”
