Andrew Dempsey reports from the Aviva Stadium

Brandon Kavanagh is keen for Derry City to claim a win against UCD on Friday night to keep their slim title hopes alive.

After last weekend’s narrow – yet costly – loss away to Sligo Rovers, the Candystripes slipped back to five points behind Shamrock Rovers with five games to play.

But with the Hoops still to face Shelbourne on Friday and St Patrick’s Athletic in a few weeks’ time, all hope is not lost yet for the Foylesiders.

Although, there is now very little – if any – margin for error.

“We've done really well in the league and in Europe,” Kavanagh told extratime.com at the EA SPORTS FC 24 SSE Airtricity League Cover Launch. “We were unlucky not to go to another round.

“But there's five games left and 15 points to play for. There's loads of loads of points there.

“We just need to look after ourselves now and hopefully win on Friday against UCD.

“We only played UCD a couple of weeks ago and that’s what the run-in is like. You feel like the games are coming at 100 miles an hour and you're playing everyone at the same every week.

“But we're always just looking forward to getting our heads down and making sure we do the job.”

And while Derry bowed out of Europe in agonising fashion against Tobol Kostanay – Kavanagh stressed that the Candystripes were able to take positives despite the blow.

“The standards are getting higher,” he explained. “We're competing with European teams and we're not only competing with them, but we're playing them off the park.

“It's not like we're playing a different style of football. We're actually playing them off the park and maybe Tobol felt like they got away with one, especially when they played us here.

“But we went through two rounds of Europe and it was fantastic.”
