Sligo Rovers claim vital win over Derry City as Drogheda United and Bohs play out scoreless draw

Sligo Rovers boss John Russell has called on his side to finish the season strongly after they defeated Derry City at the Showgrounds on Friday night.

And the Bit O’ Red’s narrow 1-0 win over the Candystripes means that they are now nine points clear of Cork City in their bid to avoid a relegation play-off.

Stefan Radosavljevic scored the only goal of the game in the 86th minute when he got on the end of a Reece Hutchinson cross into the box.

And Derry – who had Ronan Boyce sent off just minutes before Rovers struck – were unable to respond as their title hopes were hit with a fatal blow.

But Russell has called on his side to keep performing in their remaining games of the season.

“We’re just focusing on our next game against Bohemians,” he said when asked if the win eased his club’s relegation worries. “We’ve got back to back wins and two clean sheets.

“The players have put in huge performances but it is important that we push on.”

Meanwhile, Drogheda United also inched closer to safety with a scoreless draw against Bohemians at Weavers Park.

And after four consecutive defeats against Bohs this season, Drogs boss Kevin Doherty admitted he was pleased with his side’s showing against Declan Devine’s men.

But he did stress that his side are not safe yet despite being nine points clear of ninth-placed Cork City.

“I’m pleased with the performance,” he told LOI TV. “It’s a massive point because of the context of the league and the other results elsewhere.

“We still have a long way to go but it is a big point for us.”
