Newport County has confirmed the acquisition of defender Lewis Payne on a season-long loan from Championship club Southampton.

The 19-year-old has been associated with the Saints since he was a mere nine years old, and over the years, he has consistently risen through the ranks.

Payne's journey with Southampton reached a significant milestone in November 2021 when he signed his first professional contract with the club.

The young defender's credentials were further solidified during the 2021-22 season, where he played a role in Southampton's U18 side securing the Premier League South title.

Payne made his senior debut for Southampton in the Carabao Cup's second round. During the match, he played for 75 minutes and assisted Che Adams in scoring the opening goal.

He has had the opportunity to train consistently with Southampton's first team and has been trusted with the captain's armband for the B team on numerous occasions.

Speaking on the recent signing, Newport boss, Graham Coughlan, expressed his enthusiasm about integrating Payne into the squad.

"Lewis is not just a great defender; he’s an explorer on the pitch," Coughlan mentioned.

"With him on our right side, I am confident of creating more scoring opportunities. His ability to adapt to multiple positions gives us tactical depth, something crucial for the long season ahead."

Lewis Payne shared his excitement about the new chapter in his career, recalling his experience playing against Newport.

“Playing in front of Newport fans was an experience I cherish," Payne reflected. "Now, I am eager to be on their side, get to know my teammates better, and contribute to Newport’s success this season.”
