Udinese's summer squad has been strengthened with the signing of Joao Ferreira, the right-back from Portugal.

Ferreira joins Udinese on loan from Watford, with the deal set to last until 30 June 2024.

Ferreira was born on 22 March 2001 in Vila do Conde, a small town north of Porto. He kick-started his career at his local club, Rio Ave’s academy, before joining the youth ranks at Benfica.

During the 2018/19 season, Ferreira made a notable impact in the UEFA Youth League, appearing five times. He further honed his skills the following year, with 18 appearances for Benfica’s B-team, scoring one goal.

The 2020/21 season marked a significant milestone in Ferreira's career, as he made his debut for Benfica’s first team.

He made a single appearance in the league, played three times in domestic cup competitions, and took part once in the Europa League, while continuing to be a regular fixture in the B team with another 18 appearances.

Following his time at Benfica, Ferreira spent two seasons on loan, first at Vitoria Guimaraes and then at his former club Rio Ave.

His performance caught the attention of Watford, who acquired him in January 2023. He marked his brief spell at Watford with a goal in five appearances.

On the international stage, Ferreira has represented Portugal at various youth levels up to the U19s.
