Wigan Athletic have confirmed the season-long loan signing of defender Calvin Ramsay from Liverpool FC.

The Scotland international joins Shaun Maloney’s squad after spending last season with Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers.

Born in Aberdeen, Ramsay made his professional debut for his hometown club in March 2021 and quickly established himself as a promising talent.

The 2021/22 season saw Ramsay make 33 appearances for Aberdeen, including six in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

His impressive performances earned him the Scottish Football Writers' Association's Young Player of the Year award and a nomination for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year.

Ramsay's talents caught the attention of several Premier League clubs, leading to his move to Liverpool in June 2022.

He debuted for Liverpool against Napoli in November 2022 and earned his first cap for Scotland two weeks later against Turkey.

An injury cut short his first season with Liverpool, leading to loan spells with Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers.

Expressing his excitement about joining Wigan, Ramsay said, “I am over the moon. It happened quickly and I met the manager two weeks ago. I had a really good conversation, and there was an instant connection. I’m excited for the start of the season.”

He added, “When I was driving to the training ground, there was a real excitement, and I am hungry to get going and show everyone what I can do. It’s a good opportunity at a good club, and I am raring to go.”

First Team Manager Shaun Maloney commented, “I am delighted that Calvin has joined us on a season-long loan. He is a highly-regarded player who has already represented his country and gained experience in both the Scottish Premiership and the EFL. Calvin is extremely motivated to help our team achieve success this season.”

Sporting Director Gregor Rioch also expressed his satisfaction, stating, “We’re really pleased to bring Calvin to Wigan Athletic. He’s an excellent player with fantastic calibre and is a great addition to our team. I would like to thank Liverpool Football Club once again for facilitating the move, and we’re excited to see how Calvin develops during his time with us.”
