Premier Division outfit Shelbourne have confirmed the departure of goalkeeper Scott van der Sluis.

Van der Sluis, 22, has left the Reds to take part in the ITV television show Love Island.

While at Tolka Park, the goalkeeper found gametime limited – making just three appearances for Damien Duff’s side.

He made his debut for Shels last season against Bonagee United in the FAI Cup, and then made two further appearances for the club in the Leinster Senior Cup this year.

And in a statement issued on Thursday morning, Shels confirmed they ‘granted a release’ to the player from his contract.

“The goalkeeper requested and was granted a release from his contract so he can take a break from his professional football career to participate in the ITV television show Love Island,” the statement read.

“I was shocked and saddened that Scott chose a villa in Mallorca full of beautiful single women over myself, the staff and the players,” Shels boss Duff jokingly added.

“All jokes aside, I thank Scott for his services to Shelbourne and we all wish him the very best for the future, whatever that holds.”
