Gareth joined UCD from Norwich City in the summer of 2008 and made his league debut in a 4-0 win over Kildare County on 3rd April 2009. He was a central figure in the Students' defence as they lifted the 2009 First Division title but made just 3 league appearances in the club's 2010 Premier Division campaign. He signed for Alan Mathews at Shelbourne in February 2011 and played a significant part in their 2011 promotion winning campaign, making 21 league appearances. He was also an unused substitute for the 2011 FAI Cup final defeat to Sligo Rovers. In 2012 Gareth added 15 more league appearances to his total and he left Shels at the end of the season.
In 2013 Gareth returned to the colours of UCD and made 51 league appearances over the next two seasons, a period that ended with relegation from the Premier Division at the end of 2014.
In August 2016 Gareth signed for LSL side St Patrick's CY.
