Stephen ’s Biography
Dublin born Stephen spent part of his youth career at Home Farm and signed a two-year deal with Yeovil Town in 2006. During that time, he returned to Ireland for a brief loan spell with Shamrock Rovers at the start of the 2007 season. He made his League of Ireland bow against UCD on the opening day of the campaign, but it was one of only two appearances for the Hoops.
Maher returned to Yeovil and made his debut for them during the 2007/08 season, but found it difficult to break into the first team. He eventually cut his ties with Yeovil and returned to Ireland to sign for St. Patrick's Athletic in January 2009.
Stephen made 25 first-team appearances for St Pats in 2009 but he left the club at the end of the season, signing for Dundalk on 9 February 2010. He made his league debut for the Oriel Park outfit in their opening day win at Bray Wanderers on 5 March and made 30 league appearances, scoring one goal. He also played three times in the club's Europa League campaign.
The following year Stephen suffered from persistent injury but he did make 13 league appearances and played four times in the Europa League. But in 2012 he was not signed up by new manager Sean McCaffrey and spent pre-season with Sligo Rovers before signing for Roddy Collins at Monaghan United just before the season started.
Stephen made his Monaghan debut in a 0-0 draw with his former club Dundalk on the opening night of 2012, but on 18 June Monaghan withdrew from the league leaving Stephen without a club. In mid August he re-signed for Dundalk under new boss Darius Kierans. He made 8 league appearances over the remainder of the season and scored once, in a 2-2 draw with Bohemians on 13 October.
In February 2013 Stephen joined St Patrick's Athletic and made his debut as a late sub in a 4-0 win over Shelbourne on 15 April. He made just 8 league appearances in a year disrupted by injury and scored one league goal as Pats topped the Premier Division to win their seventh League title.
On 12 March 2014 Stephen signed for Robbie Horgan at Drogheda United. He made twenty league appearances for the club, scoring once in a 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers, as Drogheda finished ninth in the Premier Divison. He stayed with the club for the 2015 season and went on to make twenty-three league appearances as Drogheda United were relegated on the last day of the season. He left the club at the end of the season.
