John’s Biography
John played for local sides Ferrybank and Waterford Bohemians before joining the youth academy at Manchester United. He made his debut for the club in a League Cup game against Aston Villa in 1999 and went on to make 393 appearances in his twelve years at Old Trafford. In July 2011 John left Manchester to sign for Steve Bruce at Sunderland, where he has been ever since.
John signed for Reading in June 2018 after his Sunderland deal expired.
John made his international debut against Croatia at Lansdowne Road on 15 August 2001 and, ahead of the 2016 European championship, he has 111 caps and 3 goals to his name. He was included in the Republic of Ireland's final squad for the 2016 European Championship. After 118 appearances John retired from international football with his last game being in a friendly against the USA in June 2018 in which he left the pitch after 33 minutes to a standing ovation.
