Paul’s Biography
Paul played with his home town club Rochdale before coming to Ireland in the Summer of 1976 to sign for Billy Sinclair at Sligo Rovers.
He made his debut for Sligo in the club's opening League Cup game, a 2-0 defeat to Finn Harps at the Showgrounds on 5 September '76 but by the end of Paul's debut season, Sligo had won their first ever League title.
The following season Paul played in Sligo's FAI Cup final team that lost 1-0 to Shamrock Rovers, but he left the club, after four seasons service, in the Summer of 1980 and returned to England. He subsequently lined out for Glentoran before joining Glenavon and he played for them in the 1981 IFA Cup final.
After one season north of the border, Paul returned to Sligo Rovers in the Summer of 1981 and one year later, at the age of just 27, he was appointed player/manager of the club following the departure of Patsy McGowan.
His first season as player/boss saw Paul lift the FAI Cup when Sligo beat Bohemians 2-1 in the final at Dalymount Park. One year later, after two seasons in charge, he was sacked by Sligo who had finished bottom of the 1983/84 Premier Division table.
Despite losing his job as Sligo manager, Paul remained at the club as a player for 1984/85 under new manager Gerry Mitchell, but left the club at the end of that season and started 1985/86 with Limerick side Newcastle United.
Paul played with Newcastle for one season and was appointed manager of the club in June 1986, but he left before a ball had been kicked in the 1986/87 season to return to Sligo Rovers for a third time in August of '86.
This latest spell in Sligo colours wasn't a huge success for Paul and at the end of the season he left the Showgrounds and spent some time with Finn Harps during the opening months of 1987/88.
