Paul’s Biography

Paul is the son of former manager Jim McLaughlin and started his League of Ireland career at Dundalk under his father's management in 1982. He made his senior debut as a 17-year old in the League Cup final defeat to Athlone Town on 30 December 1982 and first broke into the league side later that season.

The following season (1983/84) he became a first team regular and he had made over 50 senior appearances when he left Dundalk in November of 1985 to join League newcomers Derry City. He won the first Division title with the Candystripes in 1986/87 and moved on to join Irish League side Newry Town that summer.

After two seasons with Newry Paul returned to Oriel Park, signing for Dundalk ahead of the 1989/90 season, when he played mostly reserve team football, making only occasional appearances for the first team. After just one season he signed for local rivals Drogheda United in the summer of 1990 and went on to spend seven seasons with the Boynesiders, racking up over 250 senior appearances.
