Stephen’s Biography
Stephen Henderson, like his father, Paddy, and his older brother, Dave, was a League of Ireland goalkeeper. Younger brother, Wayne, was also a goalkeeper as is his son, also Stephen who is a Republic of Ireland under-21 international.
Stephen played underage football with Stella Maris before joining Shelbourne in the summer of 1984. He spent most of that season with LSL side Hammond Lane and played in their 84/85 FAI senior and Intermediate Cup campaigns but his debut for Shels arrived in a League Cup match against Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds on 8 September 1985. His League debut followed in October when he played in a 3-0 defeat to Dundalk at Harold's Cross.
He made 11 league appearances for Shelbourne in 1985/86, as well as 7 further appearances in Cup competition, but left the Reds that summer to join Dundalk where he made 4 league appearances in the latter half of the season under manager Turlough O'Connor.
He went on to play for Limerick City, Lisburn Distillery, St James Gate, Cobh Ramblers, Ards and Finn Harps.
When Stephen finished playing he became a club manager, first taking the reins at Cobh Ramblers in 2004. He was in charge at St Colman's Park for four years before moving along the coast to become the boss at Waterford United in 2009. After three years at the RSC he resigned in 2012 and after a three year hiatus he returned to Cobh in 2015, resigning from that post in June 2019 when he became the Head of Youth Football at Shelbourne.
