Joshua Lindsay reports from Dalymount Park
A feisty Dublin Derby at Dalymount Park on Friday evening between Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers, finished 1-1 through goals from Filip Piszczek and Johnny Kenny.
A game of two halves would describe the game best, as Bohemians were the dominant side in the first half and the visitors took control of the second half playing in a more possession based tempo which led both teams to picking up a point in the Premier Division.
The Hoops kickstarted the Dublin derby with an attempt from Johnny Kenny, less than a minute in. The ball dropped to Kenny in the Gypsies’ box, a swipe at the ball led his shot to soar over the bar.
Kacper Chorazka denied Aaron Greene the opener seven minutes in, when Darragh Nugent found the run in behind the Bohs defence from Greene, with a great through ball. Greene failed to hit the back of the net when striking low against Chorazka, as he made a wonderful save.
The electric atmosphere inside Dalymount on Friday evening spurred the home side on early in the game, as every chance for Alan Reynold’s men sent reverberations throughout the stands.
18 minutes in, Adam McDonnell tested the Shamrock Rovers number one, Leon Pohls when James Akintunde received the ball from Jordan Flores, with his back to goal. He set the ball out to the oncoming McDonnell who struck the ball straight at Pohls.
Filip Piszczek put the home side 1-0 up twenty-three minutes in, sending the Gypsies into raptures. A looping ball towards the visitor’s box was chested down by Akintunde. He then slipped in Piszczek, who thumped the ball into the net to put Bohs ahead in the 23rd minute.
Moments later, Dayle Rooney nearly made it two. The goal scorer, Piszczek released Rooney in on goal when he carved through the Hoops defence with a cutely timed run. Rooney tried to lob Pohls, which ended up narrowly missing the target and going wide of the mark.
Kenny equalised just before halftime through a counter attack from Stephen Bradley’s men. Nugent found the cutting pass to Kenny once again, this time leading to a calm finish from the Shamrock Rovers player.
The last chance of the first half went to the visitors, when Kenny tested Chorazka yet again, trying to force that devastating blow towards the home side. The Bohemians number one was the winner on this occasion as he pulled off a tidy save to force the ball out for a corner.
The opening ten minutes of the second half proved to be in the favour of the Hoops as they took control of the game, passing the ball around causing frustration for the home side.
The Hoops had another chance 67 minutes in, when Trevor Clarke trailblazed his way from just inside the opposition half to the edge of the box, gliding through Bohemians players which then led him to pull his shot wide of Chorazka’s post.
Clarke had another chance minutes later, when he received a slotted through ball from Nugent opening of the Bohs defence once again. He took a touch and struck a low strike at Chorazka’s near post. The Bohs number one was the victor once again and avoided conceding.
An edgy last twenty minutes saw the sides finish out the Dublin derby 1-1. Bohemians will be the happier of the two to come away with a good result against Shamrock Rovers, especially coming off a 3-1 loss to the Hoops in the match previous.
