Eanna Mackey reports from Markets Field
Treaty United maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they held on for a scoreless draw against rivals Cork City in front of a bumper crowd of 3,146 at the Markets Field this Friday evening in the First Division.
In an opening half devoid of any real goalmouth action the first opportunity broke the way of the home side.
A long throw broke in the City box but Tarmey’s shot was snuffed out by the Cork defence.
The best chance of the half fell to the Rebels. Mclaughlin made a driving run from deep and unleashed a powerful looping shot destined for the top corner but it was tipped over by Chambers in the Treaty goal.
Curran was put through on goal just before the interval but his low shot was blocked by former Limerick FC captain Cian Coleman and put behind for a corner.
The first big chance of the second half fell to Thomas Considine ten minutes after the restart. His attempt on goal from an uncleared corner was blocked by the Cork defence.
His effort was followed up by a flurry of shots but the Rebel defence stood strong.
As momentum seemed to shift towards the home Considine’s pace and trickery began to trouble Cork. Just three minutes later he beat his man and lofted an inviting cross to Christopher at the back post but his shot was well blocked while the follow-up from Curran drifted over the bar.
Considine again picked up the ball on the wing in the seventy-second minute. After beating his man and delivering a placed pass Curran his shot was again blocked by the resilient Cork defence.
From the resulting corner, Curran’s header was easily gathered by Wade in the City goal.
Jack Doherty went close for the away side in the eighty-first minute as his low curled shot beat the wall and went narrowly wide of the post to the relief of the home crowd.
The best chance of the half fell to Christopher who was slipped through on goal by Costelloe but his powerful left-footed shot sliced wide of the Cork goal.
The game then ended on a sour note as Lee Devitt received a straight red card for a high challenge on Nevin in the second minute of additional time.
The home side were then forced to endure the Rebel onslaught as the spoils were shared in this fiery Munster Derby.
Treaty return to action at home next week against Finn Harps.
