League Report: Longford Town 1- 2 UCD
- Extratime Team
- Sun, Mar 31 2024
William O’Connor’s Students secured a two goals to one victory away to Longford Town, courtesy of strikes from Mikey Raggett and Jake Doyle with Longford Town Academy product Emmanuel James’ first senior goal a late consolation.
Town lined up for their fifth game of the season having conceded in the 104th minute of their 1-1 last weekend against Bray Wanderers, after seeing a 3-0 lead wiped out by Athlone Town in their previous league game.
On this occasion, however, Longford went behind with Mikey Raggett netting his second of the campaign just before the half time whistle. The teenager scrambled home his second goal of the season after the home side struggled to clear after Ciaran Behan’s run.
Indeed, Behan himself could have scored moments earlier only to be denied by Jack Brady with the netminder also pulling off a fine save to deny Mikey McCullagh.
Despite being deprived of a goal in the opening period, the former Galway United winger did manage to grab himself an assist in the second half as he latched onto an Adam Wells throw in to set up Jake Doyle on the edge of the penalty area and his curled effort flew beyond the despairing dive of Brady and into the bottom corner of the net.
The lead was halved with the sands of time running out as substitute Guilherme Rego Priosti’s corner was nodded home by fellow substitute and former Longford Town Under 19 teammate James to set up a grandstand finish. However, the visitors hung on and took all three points back to Belfield.
