Philip Morrissey reports from Turner's Cross
Cork City dropped points at home as they failed to overcome Treaty United at Turners Cross on Friday evening.
An early penalty was not built on as the visitors levelled up before half-time. There was further worry with a serious looking injury to Jaden Umeh.
It was a deserved point for the away side after a tough series of results. Former City player, Alec Byrne, levelled up just before the break as the injury hit side were forced into three changes in the first half alone.
They kept their shape and frustrated their hosts to come away with a share of the spoils.
Tim Clancy made just the one switch from the side who cruised to victory up in Bray. Jaden Umeh came in for fellow teenager Cathal O’ Sullivan who picked up a knock in that game.
Tommy Barrett saw his injury ravaged side hit by two further absences. Yoyo Madhy came
off against Cobh and his replacement, Willie Armshaw, started. Fionn Doherty came in for the suspended Oisin O’ Reilly. The Limerick side were only able to name six substitutes.
City came out in bright fashion and sought to get the ball wide whenever they came forward. Early crosses from the left by Evan McLaughlin and Cian Bargary just failed to find their desired target though.
It was a cross from the right that yielded the opening goal though. Bargary played it out to Sean Murray whose deep cross seemed to have been dealt with by the Treaty defence. Thomas Considine slipped in his attempt to clear it and handled as he fell.
Despite the protests, the penalty was awarded. Mclaughlin stepped up to send Corey Chambers the wrong way.
Considine’s night got worse shortly after when both he and Colin Conroy were forced off with injuries to increase the woes for Barrett.
In a rare attack, one of these substitutes almost drew Treaty level. Leon Kirrane shot wide when he should have done better.
Both Murray and McLaughlin had efforts over the bar as the intensity of the game fell noticeably flat. Treaty were now playing in somewhat of a 4-6-0 and struggled to mount meaningful attacks.
It was somewhat of a surprise when they drew level before the break. Bargary went down in midfield in a challenge but play continued.
Kirrane had a shot from outside the area that was parried by Brad Wade. Alec Byrne was alive to it to score against his former club. Greg Bolger was booked for protesting the earlier challenge.
City suffered an injury of their own when Umeh went to ground after going up for a header. After a delay, he was brought off for Josh Fitzpatrick.
Cork pIled on the pressure but far too often their moves broke down. Cian Murphy was often forced to face up against two or three defenders as he lacked a partner up front.
The supporting players failed to provide the necessary runs in time to collect any knock-downs.
Treaty could have stolen it when Lee Devitt stole in at the back post from a left-wing corner. The effort went over the bar though.
Try as they might, City could not produce the winner as chances went begging. Not even five minutes of injury time could yield a goal.
