Cork City
League leaders Cork City aim to extend their lead at the top when they welcome Athlone Town to Turner's Cross on Friday. (Kick-off at 19:45).
They maintained their advantage last weekend against Treaty, but they nearly suffered only their second loss of the season, with a last-gasp goal from Charlie Lyons rescuing a point.
Much of the focus has been on transfer business. Following the permanent deals for Sean Murray and Ruairi Keating, the club announced the return of legend Sean Maguire.
Keating is looking forward to linking up with him: “Who would have thought six months ago that we would be playing together? I can’t wait to get on the pitch with him. When you’re a striker for Cork City and do well, I don’t think the fans ever forget you. For the two of us to be here together is really special.”
Both are expected to be part of the matchday squad. Maguire may be limited to the bench as he aims to build up match fitness.
Athlone Town
Second-placed Athlone travel south with the aim of closing the gap between them and their hosts.
Just one loss in six games has seen them emerge as the main challengers to Cork’s promotion ambitions.
Like City, they were relieved to snatch a draw last weekend, having been 3-1 down to Kerry at home with five minutes left. Brian Torre and Dylan Hand ensured the gap remains the same.
The Midlanders will be confident of securing a positive result, having been the only side to beat Cork this season. They also know they have a game in hand.
Recent arrivals Michael McHugh and Alex Byrne are expected to play a part.
Referee: Alan Patchell
