Galway United recorded their fifth win in six games with a 1-0 victory over Treaty United at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday evening.
The win puts Galway level on points at the top of the Women’s Premier Division with Eve Dossen scoring the only goal of the game to give the Tribeswomen the three points.
Phil Trill made two changes to his side from their 2-0 win over DLR Waves last Saturday with Abbie Callanan and Amy Madden coming into the side in place of Gemma McGuinness and Aoibheann Costello.
Treaty were idle last weekend and manager Alban Hysa made just one change from their scoreless draw with Waves two weeks ago with Naoise Griffin coming into the side in place of Julie Altrogge.
It was a scrappy opening to this fixture with neither side able to create any proper chances in the opening 15 minutes with Treaty goalkeeper Anne-Marie Ulliac getting her first touch of the ball in the 14th minute when she claimed a high ball into the box by Galway’s Kate Thompson.
Jamie Erickson went close in the 17th minute when Lynsey McKey sent a ball into the box from the corner, the defender headed on goal, but the ball came back out for the Canadian to have a shot on the volley but again a Treaty defender managed to get in the way to deny the home side.
Ulliac was called into action again in the 20th minute when Aoife Thompson got on the end of a long ball, the goalkeeper came off her line to bock the striker’s shot at close range.
Kate Thompson fancied her chances from long distance in the 26th minute with a shot from way outside the box, it looked destined for the top left corner of the net only for a fingertip save from Ulliac to keep the side level.
The Tribeswomen broke the deadlock in the 31st minute with their second corner of the game, McKey floated the ball into a crowded box and Eve Dossen met it with her head at the back post to put the home side in front.
McKey linked up with Jenna Slattery on the edge of the box five minutes from the break with a nice pass from the Galway captain, the former Treaty player then cut inside her marker before firing off a shot on goal, Ulliac was well positioned to clutch the ball into her chest.
Galway were not far off doubling their lead on the hour mark when McKey fancied her chances from long distance with a looping effort from the edge of the box which sailed just wide. Slattery also went close with a free-kick moments later with the ball inching just over the bar.
McKey had another effort on goal in the 70th minute and this time she drew an excellent save from Ulliac who managed to flick the ball onto the crossbar once again – Aoife Thompson followed up with a header on the rebound, the ball looked like it had crossed the line but there was no whistle from referee Marc Lynch.
McKey hit the post in the 74th minute after some great build up play by the home side, the ball looked destined for the back of the net but it struck the bottom of the upright and came back out into play.
The visitors came so close to finding an equaliser in the 77th minute shortly after the introduction of Yasmine Saidi – the forward with nearly her first touch got in on goal with a collision between herself and Galway goalkeeper Jessica Berlin the only thing denying Alban Hysa’s side.
Galway held out for the victory in a match during which they dominated much of the possession.
The Tribeswomen are idle next weekend, but they travel to face Peamount United on Saturday, 20 May in a top of the table clash at Greenogue.
