Elicha Ahui’s 78th minute goal inflicted Derry City’s first defeat of the season.
The win moved Drogheda United up to fourth in the table while City remain three points behind league leaders Bohemians who lost 2-0 at home to Shamrock Rovers.
United played much of the game with ten men after Emmanuel Adegboyega was sent off after 26 minutes but numbers were evened up in the 67th minute when Cameron McJannet received a red car.
