Brazil launched a thunderous start to their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign with a 4-0 defeat over Panama in Group F, thanks largely to Ary Borges's stunning hat-trick.
Brazil seized control of the game from the onset, with their first attempt at goal coming from Adriana merely 44 seconds into the match.
They piled on relentless pressure on Panama's defense, culminating in Borges' first goal of the match in the 19th minute, courtesy of a well-placed cross from Debinha.
Borges added to Panama's woes by scoring a second goal just before halftime, capitalizing on a rebound from her initial header which Panama's goalkeeper, Yenith Bailey, could not contain. The score stood at 2-0 at the end of the first half.
Just after the break, Borges was involved yet again, this time assisting Bia Zaneratto for Brazil's third goal of the match.
However, the day truly belonged to Borges, who added a third to her tally in the 70th minute, heading through Bailey’s legs to complete a brilliant hat-trick on her tournament debut.
Borges was subbed off for Marta, the tournament's all-time top scorer, who delighted the crowd at Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium by making an appearance in her sixth Women's World Cup.
Borges's feat made her the first Brazilian player to score multiple goals on her Women's World Cup debut, and the fourth Brazilian to score a hat-trick at the tournament.
Speaking after the game, Ary Borges expressed her delight: "I've waited a long time for this moment. It's a dream to be able to be here, playing in a World Cup. It's one of the best days of my life...Being here is truly a dream."
In another Group F game played at Sydney Football Stadium, Jamaica secured their first-ever point in the Women's World Cup with a 0-0 draw against France, even after a late red card for Khadija Shaw. This leaves Brazil top of the group with France and Jamaica in second.
