Aisling Hannon reports from Ferrycarrig Park
Wexford Youths defeated DLR Waves in a dominant 4-1 win in Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday evening, with second place Wexford moving to within two points of leaders Shelbourne.
The home side produced a number of early chances within the first ten minutes; a long range effort from Aoibheann Clancy rocketed over the bar followed closely by a chip from distance from captain Kylie Murphy, the ball falling to the safe hands of DLR’s highly rated goalkeeper Eve Badana.
Avril Brierley had the only early chance for the travelling side with a promising long range shot into the box.
However the Youths were the more dominant force and it wasn’t long before striker Becky Watkins had another attempt from range for the home side which was excellently blocked by DLR defender Louise Corrigan.
The home side broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Ellen Molloy produced a beautiful solo goal, running through the defence and tucking the ball into the bottom right of the net.
There were several further chances following the leading goal, with Kylie Murphy tapping in a squared cross from Becky Watkins, however the effort was then ruled offside.
DLR’s Kate Mooney attempted a chip from outside the box when Youths’ keeper Maeve Williams was off her line, with the shot ultimately going over the bar. Louise Corrigan was booked for the Waves just before the half time mark after a clash with Murphy; the corresponding free kick from Clancy being curled just past the left post.
DLR started the second half strong with a good bout of possession. Sarah McKevitt soon placed a wonderfully curled attempt into the top left of the net from outside the box, levelling the game ten minutes into the half.
There were few chances between the two teams until the home side made it 2-1 on the 70th minute mark after Ciara Rossiter was gifted a long solo run with plenty of space to breeze past the unsteady DLR defence.
Shortly afterwards, defender Della Doherty squared the ball from the right side to Murphy an the Youths skipper placed it by Eve Badana to make it 3-1.
Wexford continued to dominate the remainder of the game and scored their fourth with three minutes of normal time to go.
Molloy attempted a low shot, leaving Badana struggling to get a hand to the ball from the goal line; Rossiter following it up to tuck it into the net.
Wexford stay in second place in the league table, two points behind leaders Shelbourne and four points above Athlone Town who were defeated 2-0 by Peamount United on Saturday night.
