A superb Michael Duffy first half goal proved the winner for Derry City against Bohemians at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Friday night.
The 1-0 victory for the Candystripes moved them above Dundalk (who lost 3-2 to UCD) into second place.
City now trail league leaders Shamrock Rovers by just a point.
Howver the Hoops have two games in hand – the first of which is against Finn Harps on Sunday evening.
There was a quarter of an hour stoppage early in the game after Ciaran Coll fell awkwardly requiring lengthy medical treatment.
RTÉ reported that the defender lost consciousness for several minutes but thankfully he was conscious when he was stretchered off the pitch before being taken to hospital.
The game was lit up by an absolute beat scored by Duffy in the 39th minute. Shane McEleney picked up Duffy’s corner at the back post on the right and hit it back towards him at the edge of the box.
Duffy wrapped his right foot around it and Jon McCracken in the Bohs goal could only watch it as the ball hit the inside of the post and rolled all around the back of the net to give City the only goal of the game.
City are due to play Sligo Rovers in Derry next Tuesday.
