Both Treaty United and Cobh Ramblers earned their first clean sheets of the season in a goalless draw at St Colman’s Park on Friday night.
Darren Murphy’s hosts came into this Munster derby on the back of a 3-2 reverse at the hands of Wexford last weekend and were missing the suspended Breandan Frahill, as well as the injured Sean Barron. For their part, Treaty United had an emphatic 5-1 win over Wexford a fortnight ago- their proposed encounter with Athlone Town last weekend was rescheduled due to the weather. Former Ram Stephen Christopher made his season bow for Tommy Barrett’s men, for whom Charlie Fleming- another ex Rambler- was to the attacking fore with a hat trick of assists in the Wexford victory.
However the Cobh defence, containing debutants Harlain Mbayo and Andy O’Donoghue- deputising for the aforementioned Frahill and Barron respectively- dealt relatively comfortably with their visitors throughout to record their first senior clean sheet against their Limerick based opposition, following two defeats and a one all draw in the league encounters last season.
Indeed, the home side looked like the more likely side to claim all three points as, following a quiet first period, they dominated the second half and they had the best chance of the game as Jack Brady had to make a fine double save to deny both John Kavanagh and Nathan O’Connell- firstly getting down to his left to make a sharp stop before blocking the rebound out for a corner as the game ticked down to the end. Treaty almost snatched a winner with their only real chance of the half, O’Donoghue denying the visitors as McNamara almost found the net following a free kick.
The crowd at St Colman’s Park witnessed only a single goalless draw last season- a midseason encounter with Athlone Town- while Treaty recorded two goalless draws on the road last season so the 880 patrons at this clash may feel they’ve this season’s blank scoresheet box ticked as they march on to next week’s encounters with Longford Town (Treaty United) and Cork City respectively.
