Tom Clancy reports from Jackman Park
Ellen Molloy won’t turn 17 until the summer, but in footballing ability, she appears wise beyond her years.
The Wexford Youths attacker lit up this fixture, helping herself to four goals as her side trounced Treaty United 7-1 at Jackman Park on Sunday afternoon.
Ciara Rossiter and Sinead Taylor opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half with Kylie Murphy converting from the penalty spot in the second half.
Aoife Cronin netted the single goal for Niall Connolly’s side.
It is a first victory of the season for Tom Elmes side with a clinical first half display bettered by an even more dominant display in the second half.
Both sides had just a point to show for their opening two fixtures but it quickly became apparent that the sides will have differing ambitions for the season ahead.
Ciara Rossiter made amends for an earlier miss as she profited on Treaty United’s desire to play out from the back.
The midfielder poked home, left-footed, from the edge of the area to punish a stray pass from Shannon Parbat.
It had been one way traffic in the opening 10 minutes but the hosts levelled the game through Aoife Cronin, who headed home a well-placed Aoife Horgan corner on 16 minutes.
Sinead Taylor scored the goal of the game to restore the Wexford lead in the 33rd minute when she flicked the ball over the advancing defender before volleying beyond Maebh Ryan.
If that goal was spectacular, the next was disastrous for Treaty.
Guilty of overplaying at the back once again, Wexford pounced in the 41st minute and Ellen Molloy finished powerfully to the net to put Tom Elmes side in a commanding position.
The game was over as a contest just 70 seconds into the second half. The experienced Kylie Murphy won her own penalty and finished low to open up a 4-1 lead for the visitors.
Wexford showed their considerable class in much of the second half, as they dominated both possession and territory, limiting Treaty to just scraps on the counter attack.
Molloy added to her first half effort with 3 goals in just eight minutes. The first was powerful left-footed drive from just inside the area in the 74th minute, while her next was a slalom effort accompanied by a calm finish.
Her final goal came beyond the 80 minute mark when Fiona Ryan received the ball on the left flank from Vanessa Ogbonna.
Ryan struck a beautifully lofted cross into the box where Molloy was waiting right in front of goal to tap home for her fourth of the afternoon.
Molloy is a name which will be to the fore in Irish football in the coming years, this performance capping a wonderful team display to give Youths a much welcomed three points.
