Deniese O'Flaherty reports from Head in the Game Park
Two goals from substitute Jordan Adeyemo helped Drogheda to another big win over lowly Longford Town at Head in the Game Park on Monday night.
Drogheda raced into a 2-0 lead at the break but the visitors upped their game in the second half and pulled a goal back through Aaron Dobbs. Try as they might they couldn’t add to that with Adeyemo sealing the win in the final minutes.
There was a lively start to the game and the first chance came in the eighth minute but Chris Lyons’ glancing header from a James Brown cross went wide. The home side began to get on top soon after. Ronan Murray hit a free-kick that went wide in the 14th minute and a corner from Murray in the 17th minute was headed wide by Lyons.
Lyons was giving the Town defence a torrid time and when he went down on the edge of the box, referee Damien McGrath awarded a free. Ronan Murray stepped up and beat Lee Steacy at the near post with a good strike.
Murray hit a snapshot right at Steacy before Mark Doyle doubled his side’s advantage in the 44th minute when he shot low into the net.
Drogs had half chances at the start of the second half but in the 53rd minute Town scored; Callum Thompson did well to get to the endline and cross for Aaron Dobbs who steered home after a bit of a scramble.
Town sub Rob Manley made a huge difference when he was introduced and he had the ball in the net in the 61st minute but it was ruled out for offside. Minutes later he hit an effort wide. Unlike the first half Town looked more comfortable on the ball and worked hard to try and get an equaliser.
Drogheda nearly got a third against the run of play in the 77th minute but Lyons hit another effort wide. Down the other end Manley was proving a handful but the visitors couldn’t get a second goal.
With both sides chasing another goal it was the home side that got it. Substitute Jordan Adeyemo was only on the pitch two minutes when he fired a low shot to the net. And just before the end Adeymo was on target again to seal a fine win for his side.
