Sam McKeever reports from the UCD Bowl
A double hat-trick from Yoyo Mahdy and Colm Whelan helped UCD on their way to an 8-0 win over Wexford at the UCD Bowl on Friday night, their biggest in the League of Ireland.
The Students started quickly as a good ball from the right found Yoyo Mahdy who made no mistake when slotting past Tom Murphy to set the tone for the Students as they would go on to dominate the first half.
A few minutes later Wexford had a rare attack as good feet from Jack Doherty manage to get him inside the box before his deflected shot just went past the Lorcan Healy’s post.
In the 25th minute UCD doubled their lead as a deep cross from the left from Liam Kerrigan fell straight to the feet of Mahdy who smashed home from just outside the six yard box into Murphy’s goal.
UCD were turning on the style at this point as Colm Whelan broke away before playing a fantastic threaded pass into the path of Liam Kerrigan on the left who side footed past the helpless Murphy.
Wexford kept plugging away and from a Jack Doherty corner which was headed out by Josh Collins before falling to the feet of Charlie Smith who hit a powerful shot which looked destined to hit the back of the net before Healy got down well to push it past the post.
Andy Myler’s side added a fourth goal just before half time after a Mahdy strike was parried well by Murphy before falling to the feet of Whelan who turned well at a tight angle before finishing from close range.
Seconds into the second half and Mahdy completed his hat trick as a deep free kick from the right from the striker evaded everyone before an awkward bounce took Murphy by surprise and helped the ball into the back of the net to the surprise of the UCD players.
Wexford had a brilliant chance to pull one back as striker Assez Yousoff was straight through on goal but his effort was stood up to well by Lorcan Healy in the UCD goal as he got a hand to the shot which guided the shot around the post.
A few minutes later and Andy Myler’s men made it six as Colm Whelan’s snapshot from the right hand side of the box managed to trickle past Murphy in the Youths goal as he stood there helpless as it found the corner.
15 minutes from the end and Whelan completed his hat trick which was the second in the game as he was played through by substitute Adam Verdon before Whelan had the composure to slot the ball to Murphy’s left with his right foot.
The misery continued for Wexford as another substitute Isaac Akinsinte’s original shot smacked off the post, but he reacted quickest to score the rebound as he stretched with his right foot to poke home.
