Paul Corcoran reports from Fahy’s Field
Shelbourne romped home as 3-0 winners over Galway in Fahy’s Field on Saturday evening in the Só Hotels Women’s National League.
A brace from Emily Whelan and an outstanding effort from Alex Kavanagh saw The Reds leave Galway with all three points.
Galway had the early chances with Lysney McKey striking the post from a free-kick in the 6hth minute. Lucia Lobato got to the rebound before everyone else, but her effort was blasted over the bar.
Emily Whelan struck for her first of the evening just two minutes later with a great run to split the defence. Shauna Fox almost put a stop to the attack, but Whelan was able to get a good shot off into the bottom corner of the net for the lead.
Twenty minutes into the second half Whelan struck again. The forward had been carrying out dangerous runs all evening and she managed to escape once again as a cross came into the box. She made no mistake as she slotted the ball underneath Ria McPhilbin.
Whelan became the provider for The Reds final goal of the evening. The forward had the ball in the Galway box but spotted Alex Kavanagh free just outside of the area. Kavanagh’s shot was a stunning effort into the far bottom corner with nothing the goalkeeper could have done to keep it out.
