A magnificent stoppage-time save from Brendan Clarke ensured all three points returned to Dublin as St Patrick’s Athletic beat Waterford 2-1 at the RSC.
Cory Galvin’s opener for Waterford was cancelled out by Conor Clifford before Dean Clarke endured the points after the break.
Jamie Lennon threatened first for the Saints but Matthew Connor cleared the danger.
Dean O’Halloran then found the run of Dean Walsh as Waterford attacked but Ciaran Kelly cleared the danger as Walsh tried to cut inside onto his left foot.
Clifford had an opportunity when Simon Madden crossed for Jake Walker, who found the midfielder, but Clifford’s shot was straight at Connor.
It was a spectacular strike that gave Waterford the lead on the half hour. Shane Duggan played in Walsh, who in turn found Galvin on the corner of the penalty area.
The former Bray Wanderers winger unleashed a powerful strike to beat Brendan Clarke from 20 yards.
The lead lasted just two minutes. Lennon played a quick free kick to Clifford and he unleashed an unstoppable strike past Connor from 30-yards.
St Patrick’s Athletic almost took the lead before half time when Madden found Dean Clarke but his powerful strike came crashing back off the crossbar.
The Saints took the lead just past the half hour as Ian Bermingham played in Kevin Toner to send in the deep cross.
Dean Clarke’s header at first was blocked by Georgie Poynton but Clarke fired home the rebound to give Harry Kenny’s team a 2-1 lead.
Waterford pushed in search of an equaliser and Bastien Héry found the target with a back-post header from, but keeper Clarke made the save.
Kenny Browne picked out the run of Rory Feely, who found Shane Duggan on the edge of the area, but he fired over the crossbar.
