Aaron Greene and Marc Griffin had the best chances of the game as Drogheda United and Bray Wanderers played out a scoreless draw at United Park on Tuesday evening.
The first chance of the game came six minutes in as Ryan Brennan connected with a ball in from the right. His effort though, was weak and rolled into the hands of McGuinness.
Drogheda’s first effort came after 15 minutes as Killian Brennan fired a free kick well over the bar.
Bray looked threatening going forward, particularly through Aaron Greene. The Bray forward made a run down the right, beat Deasy before shooting. McGuinness, however, got down at his near post to save.
Just a minute later, Wixted found space down the right, sent the ball into the box to Griffin who failed to beat the outrushing Peter Cherrie.
Aaron Greene continued to be the main threat for the visitors and he again got the better of the Drogheda defence on the half hour mark. This time, he cut the ball back to Gary McCabe who failed to keep his shot down and fired over the bar from the edge of the box.
Greene was again at the centre of the action with Bray’s next effort as his shot from the edge of the box landed on the roof of the Drogheda net.
Drogheda looked a better side in the second half but the first shot on target in the half took until the 67th minute and it went to Bray.
Colm Deasy was judged to have fouled Dylan Connolly on the edge of the box and McCabe’s free kick was comfortably saved by McGuinness.
Drogheda’s best chance to hit the front came with thirteen minutes to play. A Killian Brennan free kick was headed down by Gallagher to Wixted, blocked by a Bray defender and the rebound was fired into the side netting by Gallagher.
The home side had the chance to win it with three minutes to go as Griffin failed to turn home Sean Brennan’s ball that had been drilled across the six-yard box. Substitute Mark Doyle was sliding in at the back post but was also unable to turn it home.
Bray had a number of corners as the game approached its conclusion but were unable to find the winner.
