Athlone Town and Longford Town played out a 2-2 draw in the Athlone Town Stadium on Friday night in the midlands “El Clasico”.
The home team took the lead in the 12th minute when Conor Barry put Athlone in front after getting on the end of a Ryan Gaffey free-kick.
Longford replied through a Jake Kelly goal four minutes from the half tiime break. The strike was Kelly's second in the space of two weeks after his late winner against Cobh Ramblers last week.
The sides went in level at the break at 1-1.
Athlone retook the lead through Ethan Keogh a minute shy of the hour mar. They could well have extended their lead had Jason Lyons put the ball in the back of the net, instead he hit the post in 66th minute.
That miss was to prove crucial as Longford equalised late on in the 86th minute through Enda Curran.
The result sends Longford up to fourth place leapfrogging Cabinteely on goal difference following Cabo's 1-0 home defeat to Wexford Youths at Stradbrook. Athlone remain in seventh place.
