Cork City W.F.C 4-0 Kilkenny United W.F.C
By Joseph Kelly
Cork City Womens put four past Kilkenny United WFC to secure all three points on Sunday at Bishopstown in their latest Continental Tyres Women’s National League game.
City got off to a quick start when on 12 minutes Danielle Burke sent a through ball from the left-hand-side, a clever dummy from Ciara Desmond allowed Saoirse Noonan to finish to give City the early lead.
The Leesiders doubled their lead on the 22nd minute, a flowing City counter attack saw Danielle Sheehy set loose an untracked Lauren Homan who tucked it away to make it 2-0.
Lauren Homan quickly grabbed her second goal on the 27th minute after intercepting a loose Kilkenny defensive pass and got away from the defenders to slot it into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
The game settled into long periods of possession for City for the rest of the half as they tried to carve out further scoring chances. Lauren Homan had a chance to grab her hat-trick on the 40th minute but was unable to keep her attempt on target and the half ended 3-0 to City.
The second half began much as the first had finished with long periods of possession for City as they tried to create chances. Kilkenny had a near chance on the 55th minute but Danielle Burke intercepted well to snuff out the opportunity. City's first substitution was made on the 58th minute with Shannon Carson replacing Megan Kelleher.
Kilkenny had a chance on the 63rd minute with a free kick on the edge of the area and the effort from Shianna Swarry went just wide of Amanda Budden’s goal.
On the 68th minute a through ball from Nathalie O'Brien coming out of defence sent Lauren Homan free, but before she could apply the finish, she was taken down by a Kilkenny defender and the referee awarded the penalty. Homan stepped up to take the spot kick but her effort was saved by Kilkenny goalkeeper Brooke Dunne, but Saoirse Noonan was on hand to put away the rebound to make it 4-0.
Both sides tried create further chances for the last 20 minutes. City brought on Maggie Duncliffe to replace Evelyn Daly immediately after the fourth goal while Angie Carry replaced Ciara McNamara on the 73rd minute.
Lauren Homan had a deflected shot on target on the 81st minute while on the 90th minute Ciara Desmond had an effort from the edge of the box which went just wide.
At the other end Amanda Budden remained alert to the last as she made an excellent save to stop a Cliodhna Ní Shí effort which was the last play of the game and it finished 4-0 to Cork City WFC.
City's final home game of the season is next Sunday, 27th of November as they face Galway WFC in a rescheduled game.
