A late gasp Rory Patterson goal was enough for Derry City to snatch a 2-1 win for against Wexford Youths in Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday evening.
Conor McCormack had given Derry City the lead but Danny Furlong equalised with seven minutes remaining but it was left to Patterson to grab all three points with his stoppage time winner.
Wexford Youths striker Paul Murphy had the first chance of the game after just three minutes as Ryan Delaney found Danny Furlong, who in turn flicked on to Murphy.
The striker looked set to score but Derry City keeper Ger Doherty was quick from his goal to block.
At the other end, Ronan Curtis came closest to finding the net for the visitors but his deflected strike looped over Graham Doyle in the Youths goal and dropped just wide.
Furlong came close after 20 minutes mark when he latched onto Craig McCabe’s flick from Graham Doyle kick, but again Doherty was quick from his goal to make an important block. Furlong had two more efforts on the stroke of half time. He first fired wide with a first-time strike, before an acrobatic effort forced Ger Doherty into a fine one handed save to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Candystripes captain Ryan McBride almost scored the opener on the hour mark. Midfielder Barry McNamee’s corner found McBride at the back post and he forced Youths keeper Doyle into a good low save.
Derry City’s pressure paid off as they broke the deadlock after 69 minutes. Substitute Keith Ward found space to cross from the right. He Barry McNamee, who in turn laid the ball into the path of Conor McCormack and he fired an unstoppable first-time strike into the top corner of Doyle’s goal.
The Youths fought back, though, and levelled the game with just seven minutes remaining. Great work from Eric Molloy on the right who found a way past two defenders. His pinpoint cross found Danny Furlong unmarked in the penalty area and he fired low into the bottom left corner of Ger Doherty’s goal.
But the late drama didn’t end there, as Derry City snatched a late winner in the final seconds. Barry McNamee’s lofted free kick from the right found the head of Rory Patterson at the back post, and his header toward goal found a way into the back of Graham Doyle’s net to win all three points for the visitors.
