League Report: Athlone Town 2 - 2 Cabinteely

The meeting of the League of Ireland’s oldest and newest clubs finished in dramatic fashion as the hosts were awarded an injury time penalty. Athlone Town and Cabinteely took a point apiece from the 2-2 draw in Lissywollen.
Both teams came into this game with less than ideal form: Athlone were looking to get back to winning ways after two straight defeats in the league. While Cabinteely would be hoping to score their first away goal in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland First Division.
Cabo broke their duck fairly early into the game, when an Evan Finnegan cross across the box was met by Ger Pender who struck home from close range.
The away team’s advantage didn’t last too long mind. Just five minutes later, Philip Gorman finished well from ten yards to level things up.
Athlone started the second half much brighter and looked the more likely to score but were undone by a Cabinteely attack just shy of the hour mark.
Conor Foley might have missed out on scoring his club’s first away goal but his simple finish might still have made the record book for sealing his clubs first away win with his 59th minute goal. Typical. You wait all season for an away goal and then two come at once!
In the end, Cabinteely had to settle for their first point on the road. They were undone by a late late penalty when Robert Hennessy spotted a handball infringement in the box. Philip Gorman slotted home for a brace and a point.
Athlone Town can look forward to home comforts once again when they welcome Waterford United in next week’s round of fixtures.
Cabinteely are on the road once again when they face Wexford Youths in Ferrycarraig Park. Both games are on Friday the 24th with kick-offs of 7:45 and 8:00pm respectively.
