AFTER capturing the Women’s National League Cup last season Wexford Youths will bid to really compete for the title this season but will face a Cork City Women’s FC side determined to improve on a nightmare campaign last term.
Wexford coach Willie Doyle is looking forward to his first campaign with Youths although the Model County outfit have a number of players unavailable. Striker Rianna Jarrett is in the US and is not expected to be available for some time.
“There’s a few players still to come over from junior football then a few more injured including Jenny Clifford and Jessica Gleeson while goalkeeper Mary Rose Kelly is away playing Wexford GAA All-Ireland semi-finals,” said Doyle.
“We’ll be looking to get off to a good start. We beat them in the cup recently and will look to build on that although I expect they’ll be stronger this time around.”
The Leesiders go into the game without the suspended Angie Carry while Chloe Ahern and Natalie Coughlan are unlikely to feature as both have picked up injuries in pre-season. Eleanor Lucey is out through work commitments. However further new signings Shannon Lewis, Katie McCarthy, Maggie Duncliffe and Stephanie Jacob-Murphy will be available for the club.
New Manager Charlie Lynch had this to say “We have been in the process of building the club back up again in the off-season and we want to consolidate and push on from this season. It will be a difficult task to bring the club up to the point of challenging for honours in this league, but it is one that both the players and I are relishing. We’ve had a decent pre-season and we think this could be a year where women’s football in Cork can earn push on. We know the opening game against Wexford will be a difficult trip but I have faith in the players to get a result.”
