UCD Waves go into the opening game of the new campaign in the unusual position of being a ‘new’ club but being automatically rated as one of the favourites while Galway WFC have a new boss in Don O’Riordan.
“The squad is in good condition and looking forward to first game. For me it’s exciting new challenge. We know Galway will be strong, Don has huge experience and knowledge of the game so we know it’ll be a tough game for us,” said Waves boss Eileen Gleeson.
Galway WFC boss O’Riordan said: “It’s great to be involved in this league. It’s equally as important as the men’s league to me. We’ve had a good pre-season and looking to improve on last year. We’ve a very stern test in first three games with UCD, Peamount and Raheny. We didn’t get a point from those games last year so we’ll look to improve this year.
“We’ve added a few players over the summer. We brought in Marie Curtin, Claudia Hubner, Megan Kelleher and other local players who’ve impressed and we’re also waiting for some players to come back from the US. By end of September we’ll have a strong squad assembled. UCD Waves are the Man City of this league so it’ll be a real test for us. All we’ll do is request the girls give it 100 per cent, play to our strategy and see how it goes from there.”
