Cork City Women FC head into Sunday’s game against UCD Waves after suffering a 10-0 defeat to league leaders Wexford Youths Women last Sunday. City manager Charlie Lynch is under no illusion about the side of the challenge facing the Leesiders as Waves come to Bishopstown looking to remain in the title race.
“It’ll be a difficult game against Wexford as we are badly hit with injuries and suspensions coming into the game, but I have faith in my squad to dig deep and try to get a result” explained Lynch. “We were badly hit with the sending off in the opening minute in Wexford, but we showed some naivety in our play following the decision and got punished by a good side.”
This week the Leesiders announced the capture of Norma Healy, Rachel Harty and Marina Pinteño Bustilles, while Stacey Paul and Ciara Desmond have left the club. Lynch will be without Norma Healy who broke her nose in the game against Wexford and long term injury Nathalie O’Brien while Angie Carry is doubtful. Chloe Ahern and Emer Gilroy are unavailable due to study commitments but Katie McCarthy will be back in the squad after missing last weekend’s game.
Waves manager Eileen Gleeson is aiming to pick up maximum points from her sides remaining six games. Waves are currently five points behind leaders Wexford.
“It’s a trip to Cork, which is always something I enjoy with any football side” explained Gleeson. “We’re going into it off the back of a good win. Cork took a big defeat last week, it didn’t help that they were down to 10 players from early on, but they are very resilient. They’ve taken big losses before, but have bounced back and I expect a tough game. We will just have to keep going, we’ll aim for six wins in the last series of games. Any side is capable of picking up points in this league, so we just have to look after our own games.”
Kerrie Ryan is a long term absentee for Waves, otherwise Gleeson has a full panel to pick from.
