Derry City responded to being knocked out of Europe in the perfect fashion, as The Brandywell side inflicted a humiliating 6-1 defeat on a defensively depleted UCD side, at The UCD Bowl, on Sunday evening.
A hatrick from man of the match, Michael Duffy, a brace from Rory Patterson, and a rare goal from Barry Molloy helped The Candystripes to the thrashing.
Derry started as they meant to go on, and Nathan Boyle had their first chance nine minutes into the game, but his effort from the edge of the box was straight at Conor O’Donnell.
Despite a lacklustre start The Students could have taken the lead after ten minutes, as Robbie Benson found himself through on goal, but the midfielder’s effort was stifled by a brave challenge from Ger Doherty, in the city goal.
The boys in red and white began to dominate proceedings, and Patterson came close to opening the scoring, as he latched onto a loose ball, but his effort was easily claimed by O’Donnell.
The first of six came after 20 minutes, as Duffy latched onto a Mark Timlin pass, before composing himself and slotting past O’Donnell.
Nathan Boyle impressed on the day for City, and he had two chances in three minutes just after the half hour. First his volley from the edge of the box was well charged down by O’Donnell, before his 20 yard effort was deflected narrowly wide of the UCD shot stoppers post.
City grabbed their second three minutes before the break, as striker Patterson latched onto the ball, following a slip from Gareth Matthews before shooting past O’Donnell from 15 yards.
The referee’s kit may have changed at the break, but the flow of play certainly didn’t, and The Candystripes were three up, just five minutes into the second period, as Boyle dispossessed James Kavanagh in midfield, before picking out Duffy, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner, to bag his second of the game.
It got worse for The Students moments later, as Boyle found Josh Tracey, who got to the bye-line, before the pulling the ball back for Duffy who fired past O’Donnell, to complete his hatrick, and put Peter Hutton’s side four up.
UCD captain, Benson provided his side’s only response on the night, as his long range free kick was fumbled into the net by Doherty, to make it 4-1.
Mark Langtry picked up a serious looking injury on the night. Langtry clashed with hatrick hero, Duffy, as the Derry man tried to cross the ball in, however the defender fell to the ground screaming, before being helped to an ambulance.
Patterson could have had his second with 15 minutes to go, as he shot wide from 25 yards after some great build up play from Patrick Mc Eleney and Barry McNamee .
Despite the score line The Students never gave up hope, and Timmy Molloy had a chance with eight minutes to go, as he fired over from 20 yards after some promising build up play from Conor Cannon and Benson.
It’s not often Molloy scores, but this one was special. Substitute Stephen Dooley played a neat one two with Barry McNamee, before pulling the ball back for Molloy, who smashed the ball into the top corner, in the final minute of normal time.
There was to be eight minutes of added time, in Belfield, on Sunday evening, and Patterson completed the thrashing in the fifth minute of the eight, as he skipped past Kavanagh and O’Donnell, before slotting the ball into the empty net to complete the scoring and make it 6-1.
The Students travel to Drogheda next Friday to provide the opposition for Damien Richardson’s first game, as the Louth side’s game, while Derry host Bohemians.
