UCD picked up their first clean sheet of the season, as they held a ten man Bohemians side to a 0-0 stalemate on Friday night at Dalymount Park.
Roberto Lopes was harshly dismissed for The Gypsies after 31 minutes, but The Students failed to take advantage of the extra man and the scores remained level.
The visitors had the first effort of the game after just four minutes, as a long throw from Students full-back Mark Langtry found Mr Aero Dynamic himself, Robbie Creevy, but the midfielder’s tame header landed safely in the hands of the returning Dean Delany.
The Gypsies responded with their first chance of the game as the ball fell to Jason Byrne on the edge of the penalty box however, quite uncharacteristically, the veteran shot straight into the hands of Conor O’Donnell in the UCD goal.
The Gypsies had a great chance to take the lead after 19 minutes, as Paddy Kavanagh was picked out by a 40 yard pass from Roberto Lopes, Kavanagh then crossed for Jason Byrne, however the usually prolific Byrne fired into the side netting of the UCD goal.
Roberto Lopes saw red after 31 minutes, as he took down Robbie Benson who was latching onto a Chris Mulhall pass. Lopes was adjudged to have denied the midfielder a goal scoring opportunity, however it seemed that Benson just lost his balance, none the less the defender walked, and The Gypsies were down to ten.
Jason Byrne really was having an off night and the striker failed to score for the third time, as the ex-Bray man latched onto a poor UCD clearance, before shooting high and wide of the UCD goal.
Hugh Douglas had a golden opportunity to put The Students a goal to the good after 34 minutes, as the defender rose to meet Chris Mulhall’s corner, however he was denied by a fantastic stop from Bohs netminder Delany.
David Mulcahy should have put the ten men Gypsies in front minutes before the break, as the unmarked midfielder headed narrowly wide of Conor O’Donnell’s post from a couple of yards out .
Paddy Kavanagh proved a thorn in the side of The Students in the reverse fixture back in March, and his quality was there for all to see again on Friday night at the beginning of the second half, as the winger picked the ball up on the right, before putting the ball onto Kevin Devaney’s foot from about 20 yards away, however Devaney’s touch took the ball over the be-line and to safety.
Kavanagh was at it moments later, as the talented midfielder picked the ball up in his own half before charging through several challenges and unleashing an effort that was deflected wide of The Students goal.
UCD came within the width of the post of opening the scoring after 67 minutes, as Robbie Benson played a one two with his name sake Creevy, before curling an exquisite effort that rebounded back off Delany’s post.
Ex-Student Craig Walsh was denied the opener after 76 minutes, as he was put through on goal by Jason Byrne, but the midfielder’s shot was well saved by Conor O’Donnell at his near post.
There was one last chance in the game and it fell to the usually dependable Jason Byrne, however he shot Paddy Kavanagh’s cross straight into the arms of Conor O’Donnell.
