Cobh Ramblers picked up their first win of the Airtricity First Division season thanks to a 3-0 win over Shamrock Rovers B. Goals from Gary Comerford, Martin Deady and Craig Burns sealing the win for the home side on Saturday night.
Both sides were looking for an elusive win. For Cobh they were still seeking their opening victory of the 2014 season, while the Hoops had not recorded a victory since the first week of May.
Cobh had the best chance of the first half when a header from Alan O’Flynn was cleared off the line by the Rovers defence.
Overall it was tight in the opening exchanges with both teams having half chances to score. Robert Waters went close for Cobh, while Adam Whelan had a great chance with just the keeper to beat for Rovers B.
Rambler’s captain Martin Deady looked lively for the hosts but he was held off by the Rovers B defence as the first half progressed.
For Rovers B, Confrey and Lyons and Whelan up front did their best to get into a goal scoring position, but any crosses into the box were dealt with easily by Hallahan in the Ramblers goal.
Cobh started the second half brightly and they got the game’s opening goal on 48 minutes. The ball was crossed in from a corner on the left by Martin Deady and Gary Comerford was on hand to head in a goal on his debut.
Ramblers doubled their lead from the spot. Sean Heaney was shown a straight red card for his involvement in conceding the spot kick. Deady stepped up and blasted the penalty down the middle.
Craig Burns put the icing on the cake for Cobh with a third goal, heading in from a cross on the right. By this stage Cobh were in total control of the clash with few chances falling to the visitors in the closing stages.
Martin Cambridge and his players will be delighted that his side have got their first victory of the season. They will be hoping this is the start of what could be a better second half of the campaign for them.
