EA SPORTS CUP: UCD 0 - 3 Bohemians

BOHEMIANS inflicted a second three nil defeat on UCD in the space of four days at the UCD Bowl this time to ensure progression to the next round of the EA Sports Cup.
Kevin Devaney opened the scoring with a swerving finish past Mark McGinley, who could also do nothing about the second from the ever reliable Jason Byrne while youngster Jake Hyland added a third late on.
UCD enjoyed a similarly solid start to their one on Friday, but once again, were undone by a wonder strike after 11 minutes.
Devaney, picking up the ball on the left, drifted inside following a pass from Stephen Traynor, curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area, McGinley with no chance.
UCD may have levelled the affair, Gary Burke whipped in a free kick from the right. Ian Ryan got in behind the Gypsies rear guard and connected with the header, but too well and it soared over.
The students again may have pulled themselves back level when Samir Belhout, doing his best Mark Stewart impression, dipped a cross under the crossbar, but Lee Murphy expertly tipped it away to safety.
Somewhat against the run of play, the visitors could have doubled their lead. Traynor again the provider, this time for Jason Byrne.
After being slid through, he attempted an audacious chip over McGinley but this time the keeper prevented a second, saving well as he went down low to close the angle.
Bohs began the second period quickly, and may well have doubled their advantage when, after dispossessing Mark Langtry, Keith Buckley raced through.
He sized up McGinley, took a touch and elected to shoot. He did, but in truth, it was far closer to the corner flag than to McGinley’s net.
Ten minutes after the break, inevitably, He scored again. By he I mean the man who haunts the nightmares of Students faithful.
Darragh Reynor took a shot from the edge of the area following a cutback from Traynor, McGinley saved but it fell to a certain Mr.Byrne who prodded it home, for the umteanth time in his phenomenal career against UCD.
After the second goal, the Gypsies began to sit deeper. This invited UCD on, but they could not find the end product. This led to a minute long session of pinball with Bohs defenders the flippers, ricocheting the students efforts away to relative safety.
All this before Cillian Morrison finally found a way through. He tried to turn inside for the shot, but again it was blocked and Bohs were relieved of their defensive duties.
UCD continued to huff and puff as the game approached it’s dying embers. The end product was simply non existent. An overhit cross, could have found Morrison but was too high and drifted to safety.
Byrne could have repeated the feat of scoring the third goal in this fixture, but this time his radar was off. He smashed a volley from distance but it went harmlessly wide.
The game was indeed wrapped up with six minutes left on the clock. A defensive mix up by the Students allowed sub Hyland in on goal and he made no mistake, slotting calmly under McGinley to complete the rout.
