Galway soccer will be buzzing with interest this Sunday when the Bus Eireann Women’s National League’s newest club Galway WFC makes its debut against Wexford Youth Women’s AFC at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Nigel Keady believes his side are ready for their debut on the highest stage but expects a tough test against Wexford. He said: “I know Wexford were one of the strongest teams in the league last season so it’s as tough a start as you could expect.
“We’ve played a few friendlies against Colga FC and Lifford plus a couple of others to help the girls get to know one another. We’re expecting a big crowd out for this game and we want to show them what we’re capable of.”
Ruth Fahy is a concern for Galway as they await her international clearance following a spell in Australia with South Melbourne.
Wexford Youths Women have an extensive injury list with Jessica Gleeson (broken nose) and Rianna Jarrett (long term cruciate injury) ruled out. Clare Conlon (quad), Linda Douglas (knee), Edel Kennedy (quad) and Lauren Dwyer (ankle) are all on the doubtful list. New signings Kate McCarthy, Clare O’Riordan and Julia Testorp are all in the squad and manager John Flood will be using all his guile and experience to select a competitive starting eleven from his depleted squad.
