Cork City easily progressed to the second round of the EA Sports Cup as they saw off Wexford Youths 4-0 in Ferrycarrig Park.
There was a familiar name going round the ground as Danny Furlong, former top marksman at the Youths for the last three seasons, came back to haunt them as he bagged two well worked second half goals. City did shuffle the pack, but still had quite a strong side out.
It was Furlong who first tested Brandon O’Callaghan’s goal after seven minutes as his low shot was well saved, with the Rebel Army dominating the opening exchanges yet creating little.
The opening goal came on 25 minutes from a set-piece as full back Ian Turner slotted home a well placed free kick over the wall from 25 yards.
City were really on top now and got there second with a sweet strike from outside the area by Shane Duggan just after the half hour mark after being well assisted from a short free kick.
Youths’ only real opportunity of the game came when Joey Mulcahy played a great ball over the top for the Youths to put Shane Clarke one on one, but his effort was well saved by Kevin Burns.
In the second half, Cork really showed the gulf in class between the sides when Daryl Kavanagh clever ball over the top found Furlong, who netted a great solo effort as he rounded O’Callaghan to make it three nil.
Just five minutes later it was four as Adam Rundle squared for an easy tap in for Furlong who was a real thorn in the side of his former club. He was replaced soon after to a gracious reception from the home fans.
Youths never really threatened in the second half and it was a comfortable night for the Premier division side. Key players for them were Kalen Spillane and Shane Duggan. Youths however know their main aim is the league this season and will not be too discouraged.
