DROGHEDA UNITED
Drogheda United will be looking once again to a cup competition to register a win as they welcome Cork City to Hunky Dorys Park on Monday night in the EA Sports Cup quarter-final (kick-off 7.45pm).
In the previous round of the League Cup Drogheda United emphatically defeated Longford Town by six goals to nil. Since then Mick Cooke's men have lost four league games, conceding eight goals and scoring two however they did record an FAI Cup win over Bohemians.
Drogheda will welcome back the suspended quartet of Ryan Brennan, Alan Byrne, Alan McNally and David Cassidy however Eric Foley is still out, he will be out for a few weeks recovering from a hernia operation. Philip Hand is a doubt.
Drogheda United Assistant manager Robbie Horgan spoke ahead of tomorrow night's game,
"We are the EA Sports Cup holders, we will treat the game with the respect it deserves. We all know Europe is on Thursday and all the lads want to play in that, but we take each game as it comes and we would like to defend our EA Sports Cup title.
"It's good to get the four lads back into the team, we will be putting out a strong team for tomorrow night, we'll deal with Thursday once the final whistle goes, but for the moment everything is focused on the EA Sports Cup. We won't be underestimating Cork City either, they are no pushovers."
CORK CITY
Cork City will be hoping to banish memories of their 3-0 defeat to UCD on Friday night as they look to progress to the semi-finals of the EA Sports Cup.
The sides met in the league just prior to the break, with City claiming a 1-0 win thanks to Daryl Horgan’s sublime goal. The previous meeting between the two at United Park earlier in the season saw Drogheda claim a share of the spoils thanks to a late penalty after Shane Duggan had given City the lead.
Speaking ahead of the game, City boss Tommy Dunne told CorkCityFC.ie that his side are keen to claim a place in the semi finals of a cup competition for the second time this season.
“Having faced UCD on Friday, we are travelling again on Monday back up to Drogheda. There are a number of players who will probably get game time in that match, but it is still a game that we want to win as it would get us to the semi final of the competition.
"Drogheda is a really tough place to go, it’s a tight pitch and it will be a physical game, so we need to be up for that side of the game and that will hopefully give us an opportunity to progress to the semi final."
City have no fresh injury concerns after Friday night’s defeat to UCD. Defenders Dan Murray and Kevin Murray are both ruled out, while Colin Healy is also out. Midfielder Brian Lenihan and striker Danny Morrissey are also sidelined.
